Ceramic tiles are made of wet clay that has been extruded and cut or pressed into molds to form their shape. All ceramic tiles are given a long-wearing glaze on top, which is what gives the tile its color and finish.
Ceramic tiles that are glazed before firing, only going through the kiln once are known as monocottura. These tiles are frequently recommended for walls and other light uses. Monocottura tiles may be thinner and more fragile than other ceramic materials and are often designed for light use. They may have a glossy or matte glaze finish, depending on the brand, and this glaze can be solid or may vary in color and texture over the tiles within one lot.
Tiles that are fired before glazing, then fired again are known as bi-cottura, and are generally more durable, often being used on floors and countertops. Bi-cotture tiles are often thicker than monocottura, as well as harder, and some may also be vitrified and non-porous beneath their glaze as well. This may make them good choices for light exterior use or in areas like steam showers.
